Can an engineer do anything other than design and build things?
Q. Most engineers work in companies and they design/build things. Can they do anything else other than creating things? Provide examples. Thank you!

A. Did you know you can have someone who is a top academic, but hopeless with their practical skills. I once remember an Aeronautical Engineer who didn't know how to service his car. The same reason is why some Doctors cannot become surgeons, they are hopeless with their hand co ordination and skills. It is a rare person who is an Academic and a Practical Skilled person as well. Ask any builder what they think of Architects as well.

How do I get them to build my design?
Q. I have designed an airplane that I would like to see take to the skys as the real thing, however, it is rather large so I cant build it in my garage, and it would cost upwards of $50,000,000 AUS. I know it sounds stupid but it could really work. I have also designed an aircraft never seen before capable of being used by the military a great deal. Can anyone help?

A. If it is really radical people will be skeptical. One idea is to build a small scale flying model first. Not necessarily scaled exactly, as that is not always possible, but something to show proof of concept. Proper drawings, even if basic, will also help. Any special formulas, design notes etc. Show how these apply to the model's performance. These are all things that make it easier for someone to make a decision. I would look it up too, as just about anything will fly with enough power and a little understanding, and it has probably been tried before. There have been tandems, flying discs, flying wings, tail first, all built, and with models there are more exotic or outlandish, with flying animal shapes (yep pigs too) as people take up… [cont.]

A. We kind of have the same thing going on here locally in New Jersey. Illustrate with drawings, maps and pictures. Make it as real as possible. It doesn't happen overnight, and it won't be perfect. The railroad is 80% to 90% political. Even if you own the line you will receive the governments help along the way. Make things easy to understand for the general public and the people in political power. Don't disregard anybody. Word of mouth - local newspapers (traditionally newspaper reporters love the railroad) along with the internet will be important tools. Get support from local business organizations and political bodies (Town Council, Planning Board, Freeholders, Rotary) We chose to use chart boards as opposed to powerpoint, because it… [cont.]

Any body has experiences in wind tunnel design, build and operation?
Q. If you think you have enough experiences in design, build and operation of a wind tunnel, and you are interested in helping me building one for my client somewhere in south east asia. Why don't you send me your cv and your expectation?
Asked by rabbit.2006 - Tue Feb 20 08:45:14 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm an aerospace engineering student at Politecnico di Milano and during some courses I had some experiences in using a windtunnel (actually quite small, about 30x30cm cross-section and about 5 m of overall length, "open" circuit). I had also the opportunity to visit also the "industrial" windtunnel in my university (used by Agusta, Aermacchi, Luna Rossa America's cup team...) that has a lot of really interesting solutions. I also visited other windtunnels in my university, also a plexiglass in-scale model of the "industrial" that is used for little experiments(about 60x40cm cross-section).. I have no experience in building windtunnel,(except when I was 13 years old, I tried to build one as school technical project, it worked, but only 10… [cont.]

How do you make, build and design a Windmill that will raise water to the surface of a well?
Q. this is for my science project; design challenge. pls. HELP! thaaanks. :)
Asked by livelaughlove - Tue Jun 16 19:19:55 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First you have to get a set of performance numbers and specifications for the pump and windmill. Then you design the pump and the windmill and how to connect them together. Raising water just to the surface of a well is not very useful. You should raise it higher to a storage tank in your attic or some other high location, so you can have water when there is no wind, and to provide some water pressure. The size of the tank determines how long you can draw water when there is no wind, and depends on your water usage. One other important number is the capacity of the pump in gallons per minute or other similar units. .

A. First take a course in living in abject poverty because until you own the company and have a large government or UN grant, you will be working for a salary that might be somewhat less than you could earn at McDonald's. Your heart is in the right place and the need for that service is awesome but most of the workers are not well paid because money is in short supply. You need more facts. Research the field and see if it is a realistic dream for a career or would you best meet the need by donating a few years of your life to Peace Corps or another similar organization to give of your time and energy but find another way to meet your own needs for a family and security. Best of luck to you and bless you for having a caring heart.

Asked by RN - Thu Oct 11 22:29:45 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are serious about websites either for personal or your business, don't go to free web hosting as they are usually not reliable and you may end up losing all your hard work. Free web hosts usually put advertisements on your websites and it could be annoying. If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account. I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent. Hostmonster They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 3000 MB (300 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name"… [cont.]

Do architectural engineers build and design houses and/or buliding?
Q. I'm asking because I was on this website and it didn't say anything about building or designing houses and/or buildings.
Asked by Lil Stevi Baybee 2013 - Thu Dec 3 12:15:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Orange's answer is mostly correct, but I think he misunderstood your question. As he said, an architect with design experience may feel comfortable designing the form and structure of a house or building. In Colorado they can design the structure of up to a three story building on their own "Stamp" and responsibility, but that rarely happens. More frequently an architect will hire a structural engineer to complete an efficient and safe design for the house or building. An architectural engineer is a branch of civil engineering that focuses on the design of buildings. An architectural engineer (as I am) studies structural design, electrical design, lighting design, HVAC design, geotechnical design, and so on. This is far different… [cont.]

Q. Got a project at college to design and build a conservatory . don't really know where to start. Guess it would be size, building regs and planning permission and the types of foundations. I would appreciate any help. Need to use CAD aswell to design it.
Asked by Chris M - Sat Feb 2 15:52:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Suggest you log on to your local council web site look under building control/planning, this should give a guide to planning permissions and building regs required for conservatory. As for other information on foundations there are plenty of web sites out there and you should have access to technical books from college or you could try wickes, they will have a leaflet on technical info which may help with how you want to present it on CAD

Can I hire students to design and build an (affordable) green house in CA?
Q. I wonder if it is possible to hire advance students to design and build a green (and affordable) home. I'm thinking about a shipping container house and find someone who can lay out wiring, plumbing, septic, isolation, etc. Do I need certified professionals in California to build one? Thanks so much for your answers.
Asked by ss000kk - Wed Aug 26 19:06:46 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. California is a touchy state. First you need to talk to your local code enforcement agency about this. I'd hate to get started on this project, and have it slammed "shut down" and out any money. There are areas in California where these trailers have piled up, and they are being used as housing. Long Beach I believe. If you do get the ok. Find a collage or tec school. Check it out, and run your idea through the teachers. If they like the idea, let them take it to the Dean with you attending. Also retain a lawyer and Insurance. Just in case someone gets hurt. Our state seems to be a big SUE state., either by somebody getting hurt,. Or that neighbor down the street.
