Can an engineer do anything other than design and build things?
Q. Most engineers work in companies and they design/build things. Can they do anything else other than creating things? Provide examples. Thank you!

A. Did you know you can have someone who is a top academic, but hopeless with their practical skills. I once remember an Aeronautical Engineer who didn't know how to service his car. The same reason is why some Doctors cannot become surgeons, they are hopeless with their hand co ordination and skills. It is a rare person who is an Academic and a Practical Skilled person as well. Ask any builder what they think of Architects as well.

New build home Design Center Upgrades? Which ones improve the homes value?
Q. I think I got a great deal on a new build home. Now it's time for the landscape, wiring, and design center appointments. I'm cool in all areas except the design center. Light fixtures, faucets, etc, I can do myself. Is it smart to upgrade the counter tops, cabinets, sinks, etc (major items)? The costs of these items are rolled into the price of the home at closing. OR should I wait until my finances permit and do them myself? The only thing I'm sure on upgrading is the carpet pad.

A. Kitchen and bath upgrades (especially master bath) are key resale selling points. Also crown molding in the primary living areas is a big plus. Good luck.

How do I get them to build my design?
Q. I have designed an airplane that I would like to see take to the skys as the real thing, however, it is rather large so I cant build it in my garage, and it would cost upwards of $50,000,000 AUS. I know it sounds stupid but it could really work. I have also designed an aircraft never seen before capable of being used by the military a great deal. Can anyone help?

A. If it is really radical people will be skeptical. One idea is to build a small scale flying model first. Not necessarily scaled exactly, as that is not always possible, but something to show proof of concept. Proper drawings, even if basic, will also help. Any special formulas, design notes etc. Show how these apply to the model's performance. These are all things that make it easier for someone to make a decision. I would look it up too, as just about anything will fly with enough power and a little understanding, and it has probably been tried before. There have been tandems, flying discs, flying wings, tail first, all built, and with models there are more exotic or outlandish, with flying animal shapes (yep pigs too) as people take up… [cont.]

Where can i find an engineer to design and build a prototype?
Q. i have an invention but cant find an engineer to design and build, who wont steal my idea
Asked by rockstarr - Thu Nov 29 20:43:13 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, make sure you've documented your invention in your engineering notebook. Date your notes and have them witnessed and signed. This will give you legal proof that it was your idea and the date that you came up with it. Next, you need to find the appropriate type of engineer. Is it an electrical, mechanical, or a process design? Each of these would take a different type of engineer. Next, go find a professor in your local engineering university. He or she will likely be able to find you a local source of prototyping. You might be able to have a student do it for a lab project and your costs will be minimal. Congratulations and good luck with your invention!

What are common household problems in which you need to build/design something to fix it?
Q. I can't think up an idea for my DT GCSE project.

A. New cable installation, in a house or room not previously wired with cable. Rain water collection. Improper water drainage from the property. Cracked concrete steps or driveway. Direct sunlight on a certain side of the house through the whole day. Sometimes requires awning, or window covers to stop direct sunlight from warming the house too much. Proper ventilation. or if you are thinking of an idea to correct annoyances. 1. find a way to easily clean behind facets. 2. make a door sweep that doesn't hold dirt or mud. 3. make a door handle for the bathroom that disinfects anyones hands that touches it. Or won't open until hands are washed.

What qualifications do you need to design/build guitars?
Q. Do you need any kind of college courses or a degree or something? If not what do you need to do?
Asked by KJ - Sun Aug 31 16:40:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You don't need a qualification per se but you will need to demonstrate some experience in the area (some graphic design and a familiarity with the impact that a guitar's design has on it's sound). Think of the number of musicians who have designed their own signature guitars yet never finished school! You could perhaps speak to somebody at your local music store and see what they think. Get familiar with products on the market and the design of those products, get to know what makes each unique and what style each brand favours - this will help you if you want to get work with one of those companies at some stage. Maybe even have a go at making your own designs and building them at home (safely!)... even if they are a disaster at least… [cont.]

What's the definition/use of the word "commission" relative to design/build and construction?
Q. Need a link if anyone could... it's supposed to be the handing over phase where the builder/contractor checks all of its works to make sure that the infrastructure is operating as it should.
Asked by afobisme - Tue Aug 19 11:33:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here is one link that I found that fits the context of your question. Scroll down to the "Energy" paragraph/section All of the other links I found use the word "commission" to describe the act of starting the process of creating a new building. That is, collecting capital, hiring architects and building engineers, etc. That's one use of the word. The other use for the word is as you describe. When the building inspectors finish inspecting all aspects of a new construction, they declare it fit for public use and occupancy. That is a form of commissioning. .

A. my studio is a relatively small one, but it gets the job done. I have a 15" Apple MacBook Pro. The ease of use, non-virus and the power of two NVIDEA Graphics processors all help to create quickly and efficiently. I also have Adobe CS4 Design Premium. This gives me tools I need for print, web, and interactive design. I also use a Wacom Graphics Tablet. This is also a must. Drawing with the mouse is a lot like drawing with a bar of soap, so having a tool to draw directly on a screen is huge. I use thw Bamboo Fun tablet. It's got a smaller price and footprint than the more widely known Intous tablets, but it still has ample room to draw. I use a 4x6" tablet. How do I build an Interior Design Porfolio for school if my background is not in art or a related field?
Q. I have a BA in Psychology and am looking to pursue my passion in Interior Design. However, I'm finding that building a portfolio is a challenge because I don't have an art background or any projects to photograph. Are there any suggestions as to where I should start?
Asked by aSoulfulshine - Mon Aug 11 13:50:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but you should really start by getting some sort of interior design certification - at least a career diploma - from an accredited institution. By doing this you will be able to begin a portfolio using your coursework, plus any real-world experience you can arrange as a student. Having a passion for interior design and knowing what looks good isn't going to be enough to build a career on. Your professional reputation and level of success will depend on your ability to prove to potential clients and/or employers that you have the knowledge, skill and talent to do the job.

If I signed a design and build contract for home improvement?
Q. Am I obligated to build with the contractor even if I am unsatisfied with their price, and service? I am in California.
Asked by Chris - Thu May 17 21:11:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, you are. If you weren't happy with the price, why did you sign the contract? If the work has been done and the workmanship is questionable, or if they used "bait & switch" tactics, or they added on change orders that you didn't sign an agreement for you may have a legitimate claim (based on your question, however, it appears that you have not started construction yet). If you really want out of it, contact an attorney who specializes in construction law. He may be able to negotiate something for you (or get you out of it completely). Design/Build is very expensive, so whatever you spend on a lawyer might be money well spent. If you have a bona fide complaint with the contractor contact the CSLB: Be sure to read this before you… [cont.]
