Watercraft rowing is the act of propelling a boat using the motion of oars in the water. The difference between paddling and rowing is that with rowing the oars have a mechanical connection with the boat whereas with paddling the paddles are hand-held with no mechanical connection. This article deals with general rowing including the recreational, transportation and utility aspects of rowing, rather than the sport of competitive rowing which is a specialized case of racing using strictly regulated equipment and a highly refined technique. From Google News Search: "Rowboat" I want to take a rowboat out onto a local California lake. What boating laws/licenses should I be aware of? Q. This would be a tiny, simple, oar-powered wooden rowboat. I'd row it out into the middle of the lake just for fun. Do I need a license? Does my boat need registration? Are there certain laws or etiquette regarding my behavior which I should be aware of? Where do I start looking? Additionally, what if I want to do this at night? Am I legally required to have lights or anything like that? Asked by Kramer - Fri Aug 15 13:52:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. No license or registration is required in California for a rowboat that is not powered by an engine. A floatation device is needed. At night, a simple white light is what is required, preferably one with a 360 degree illumination. The only etiquette I would recommend is to stay away from boats towing skiers. Any other conditions are the ones that concern your personal safety.
