A sailboat or sailing boat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails. The term covers a variety of boats, larger than small vessels such as sailboards and smaller than sailing ships, but distinctions in size are not strictly defined and what constitutes a sailing ship, sailboat, or a smaller vessel (such as a sailboard) varies by region and culture.

Further information: List of sailing boat types

At present, a great number of sailboat-types may be distinguished. Apart from size, sailboats may be distinguished by a hull configuration (monohull, catamaran, trimaran), keel type (full, fin, wing, centerboard etc.), purpose (sport, racing, cruising), number and configuration of masts, and sail plan. Although sailboat terminology has varied across history, many terms now have specific meanings in the context of modern yachting.

How do you turn a car into a sailboat?
Q. It is imperative that a friend and i transform her 4 door into a sailboat to drive in front of someone's house while blasting Rise AgAINST. It need not float nor operate in water.

A. Arrrggghhh, MATEYS!!! Go to your local building supply and buy some white PVC pipe. Get the glue that goes with it. The different sizes can telescope, so be sure you get the right sizes. Use a 2" diameter piece about 6 feet or 8 feet long for the lower mast, Cut another piece of the smaller diameter pipe, again about 6 or 8 feet long, with an extra 2 feet you can telescope inside the lower mast, so when you glue this all together, you get a reasonably sized mast. You can either cut a hole in the roof of the car and mount the mast, or make some brackets and attach it at a door frame. Run clothesline for whatever rigging you need. Get some cheap white sheets at a 2nd hand store, and fold them so they act as sails. Tie your "rigging' off to… [cont.]

How much does it cost to maintain a sailboat?
Q. We'd like to know how much it would cost for all the indirect costs of owning a 20-40 foot sailboat/yacht... such as: - Insurance - Docking fees (on the East Coast) - Maintenance - Other If we had 100K to spend, what size could we reasonably afford? We'd be looking for used, not new.

A. The below link has lots of good information including an idea on costs for the things you mention. It is certainly worth a visit if you are thinking of buying a sailboat... One thing for sure... everything you do regarding money - is determined by the length of your boat. Insurance, Dock or slip fees, stowage, haul outs, raising & lowering the mast, sails, rigging, maintenance - everything! is a per foot fee based on the length of your vessel. To say a 40 foot boat (even after it is long paid for) will cost you twice as much as a 20 foot boat, is very true - but actually, it will cost you much more then twice the amount... Why? because the bigger boat requires larger stronger sails, heaver guage, stronger and longer rigging, etc. etc. … [cont.]

What is a good trimaran sailboat for a beginner with no previous sailing experience?
Q. Is there a trimaran sailboat out there that a beginner could start out with and still enjoy once they gain more experience?
Asked by Dan A - Wed Jun 20 03:07:18 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The good tri's are not recommended for the beginner. The poorer ones you would not want after you learned to sail. Take some sailing lessons on a Sunfish where you can learn the ways of the wind and waves(and current if you are where there is that too). Learning to sail well on a small boat lets you really feel the wind and learn the basics better. Then advance to a good tri.
