Electronics is the branch of science and technology which makes use of the controlled motion of electrons through different media and vacuum. The ability to control electron flow is usually applied to information handling or device control. Electronics is distinct from electrical science and technology, which deals with the generation, distribution, control and application of electrical power. This distinction started around 1906 with the invention by Lee De Forest of the triode, which made electrical amplification possible with a non-mechanical device. Until 1950 this field was called "radio technology" because its principal application was the design and theory of radio transmitters, receivers and vacuum tubes.

Most electronic devices today use semiconductor components to perform electron control. The study of semiconductor devices and related technology is considered a branch of physics, whereas the design and construction of electronic circuits to solve practical problems come under electronics engineering. This article focuses on engineering aspects of electronics.

What technology or electronics could you do without in a recession?
Q. Since economic times are getting more difficult, what electronics or technology would you eliminate to save money? For example, cutting back on cellphone use, cable service, satellite radio, video games, internet usage, etc. Give a brief reason why you picked that item.
Asked by Verve - Thu Jan 29 11:14:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I'm a new driver and my parents won't let me go anywhere without a cell phone for safety reasons. We have cut back on cable tv and we are also considering completely eliminating our home phone since my mom, dad, sister and I all have cell phones. Another thing we're doing is just trying to be conscience of simple things like turning off the lights, turning down the thermostat, using less hot water and car pooling. Haven't seen a huge difference yet but it's kind of taking the financial edge off. We can't eliminate our internet because I'm taking online classes and also do most of my work over the internet. We also haven't blown any money on video game systems and new games. We also got rid of one of our music programs since we were… [cont.]

Why do some battery electronics use lithium ion batteries and others use nickel cadmium?
Q. Isn't one type of battery better than the other? Why don't all electronics use the better battery and which type of battery is the better battery?
Asked by . - Tue Mar 2 04:44:42 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. NiCads are cheap and like providing a lot of current, which is why they are used in power tools and such. NiMH the same, except they require the added expense of a smart charger. Lithium ion batteries are used in electronics to make them smaller and lighter than they would have to be with standard alkaline or rechagrable cells.
