Sailing is the art of controlling a boat with large (usually fabric) foils called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves. While there are still some places in Africa and Asia where sail-powered fishing vessels are used, these craft have become rarer as outboard and modified car engines have become available even in the poorest and most remote areas. In most countries people enjoy sailing as a recreational activity. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising includes extended trips, short trips within sight of land, and daysailing. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Sailing" What type of sailboat is best for blue water sailing? Q. I am interested in learning to sail, and would like to go ocean sailing. I would like to know what type of sailboat is the best type for ocean sailing. Asked by Charlie - Tue Aug 4 08:59:35 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. I personally would go with an Oyster. They are not made until you order it. Customized to meet your specific sailing needs. They are excellent blue water sailing yachts. They range in size from 46' to 125'. I'm curious to know what living conditions are like onboard the average commercial sailing vessel. I'm considering attending a Maritime academy and becoming licensed as a sailor/deck officer. How are the living/sleeping quarters? What about showers and bathrooms? Asked by Piper - Tue May 6 21:38:08 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well if you go to an Academy you will graduate with a license and become an officer on board. You will have your own state room with double bed, your own head with shower, desk, maybe lazy boy or couch, and maybe TV (you can always bring one on board). Someone will make your bed and clean your head everyday. You get three meals a day and if you have a good steward and cook the meals will be great. Most ships have a large selection of movies, DVD, and books. Most ships have email to write home. Some of the coast wise ships I have been on have had direct TV in the rooms, which is pretty cool. All in all most companies make life on board ship very comfortable. I was even on one ship that had turned a long passageway into a bowling alley. Q. ok so the wind is coming in so i go in a diagnal route. But right when i turn to go the other way i just get stuck in the wind. I have a sunfish boat. Any tips. Sailing by the way haha Asked by The Griffon at Busch Gardens!!!! - Fri Oct 2 16:48:05 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sorry I have not sailed a sunfish, but most small boats are similar. 1) choose your time to tack (change direction where the front of the boat goes through the wind). Look for flat water, after a wave or between a series of waves. 2) keep your speed up, make sure the sail is filled when going into the tack, lean (hike out), so you start the maneuver at full speed. 3) smoothly but quickly push the tiller (controls the rudder) away, violent movements of the tiller slows the boat, resulting in getting stuck. 4) start to move across the boat, time your movement so when sail crosses the centre line you are also crossing the centre line of the boat. 5) when the nose (bow) of the boat has traveled through the wind, start to straighten the tiller… [cont.] Answered by Tim Allard - Fri Oct 2 19:05:31 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Sailing" on Lake Michigan Slideshow | TripAdvisor
