What single book is recommended for someone wanting to learn to sail?
Q. I am learning to sail now by interning on a commercial sailing vessel. I have a rudimentary understanding of the physics of sailing from prior aviation training, but I need to learn more of the sailing language, rules of the road, why things are done the way they are, etc. Also, I need to learn what permits, licenses, classes, etc I would need to sail to the caribbean and beyond, and possibly run charters.

A. If you only could have one book from which to learn about sailing and how to sail - this would be it:The Annapolis Book of Seamanship.

What is the best route and time to sail from Washingon State to New Zealand?
Q. We want to sail from Seattle to New Zealand making periodic stops along the way for a day or so island hopping all the way down. We understand we may be stuck in New Zealand for several months before the weather is right to sail back. We are in a 30 foot Columbia Defender right now but are considering buying a bigger boat (maybe 35 to 40 footer) but this little Defender is a tough, scrappy boat and set up nicely for two which is all we are.

A. I would go Galapagos, Pitcairn, Polynesia, Cook, (maybe a few more) New Zealand. Way back would be strait up to Hawaii and over.

A. Jacques Costeau designed the Turbo Sail and tested it on his boat the Alcyone which was able to outrun the Calypso. The Turbo Sail probably is the most efficient single sail. It is however a modification of the Fletner Sail. Professor Hamada of Japan outfitted a Very Large Crude Carrier with a Wing Sail which is an array of orientable aircraft wing sections and proved to be an effective means of cutting down the fuel consumption of large vessels in the high seas. The regular triangular sail has been adapted as the standard sail shape for racing. If fitted with battens, the efficiency is somewhat improved. But a remarkable improvement is attained by bending the end of the mast so that the sail functions similar to that of a turbine blade.… [cont.]

What kind of sail boat would I need to travel the world?
Q. My wife and I are interested in sailing around the world, and were wondering what our best options are for a used sea-faring sail boat? We don't want to spend more than $50,000 on a used boat. The boat needs to have enough space to accommodate at least two people comfortably. I also prefer a boat that has relatively easy & affordable maintenance. Anyone who can help us with good advice will be much appreciated...Thank You.

What is the best way to sell an antique sail boat that is in need of restoration and repair work?
Q. I recently inherited this boat -- 1937, 35 feet, with sails and a restored motor. Unfortunately, the motor is the only restored item. The rest of the boat is need of structural work in order to make her sea-worthy once again. She was once (and can become again) a beautiful vessel. I am not knowledgable about sail boats, so I would like the future owner to be someone who will give her the care and attention she needs. I am sure that she will be an ideal investment for someone, who is willing to do (or fund) the repair work. Once the work has been completed, she will surely be worth a considerable amount of money, given her age. I sell lots of items on ebay, but somehow think that is not the best venue for this kind of transaction.

A. Buy a copy of Woodenboat magazine - place an ad there. Check out acbs.org - the Antique and Classic Boat Society. Run a free ad on Craigslist.org. Lots of options - ebay gets lots of exposure, but plan to run the ad extra long - 10 days or more would be my recomendation. Be realistic on the reserve or starting bid. It's likely the boat purchase will be a fraction of the money spent in order to make it seaworthy again.

What is the biggest sailboat 2 people can sail?
Q. If you only have two people with average sailing experience how can you determine what the biggest sailboat you could sail is? I'm not looking for a exact # but a general idea. I know 15-20 foot two people could sail but what about 50 -75 ft?
Asked by djadambomb8080 - Thu Aug 13 17:36:08 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sailboats can be rigged to single hand at 75 feet. It's been done. What you ought to be asking yourself is what can you...personally handle. Some people are incompetent with a 620. Some master a ketch right off the bat without even seeing a 620. Hmmm...13 feet versus 35 feet minimum. Take a look around you next time you're on a highway. What's the biggest car or truck that you feel the driver is competent driving? Some are idiots..some are smart for the size of the vehicle they are running. What's so different?

Q. I recently met a friend who shares some sailing fantasies. He is saying you can just buy a 28' sail boat and sail across the pacific. Is this true, i would have though you'd need a bigger boat. How small of a boat is possible and how long would it take if rushed?

A. The Herreshoff 28 design has made more round the world voyages than any other boat in history so that should answer the question. It's a beauty to sail and can take on a hurricane with ease.

How does a large ship sail against the wind?
Q. I hope this question isn't dumb, but I can't figure it out. I've never seen a real sailboat or a ship so I have no clue how they are able to sail into the wind.
Asked by valley_dweller - Fri May 2 15:10:46 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sailors use a process called tacking where they point the bow of the boat at a 45 degree angle to the wind and sail off to one direction, then eventually make a 90 degree turn to the direction. The on coming wind pushes the boat away from the intended straight line, but forward progress is made.

A. Hi there. Mildew is a living plant. To kill it use a spray bottle with bleach and water (50-50 mix). This will take a few applications. Bleach will stain non white fabrics white. The next choice would be straight white vinegar. Sunshine will also help. With both methods, a few applications may be necessary. Happy sailing.

A. There are so many variables that it is impossible to say. Size of boat, time of year, number of crew and experience, whether you want to take the risk of sailing through coral reefs at night... It is about 3,000 nautical miles. I would reckon an absolute minimum of 25 days, but that is really a guess.

A. Your question isn't easy to answer. At 1870, ocean-crossing steamers were still a quite new invention. The big majority of the emigrants at that time were still traveling on sailing ships. If the weather conditions were excellent, they could make the way to New York in about four weeks. But if everything went wrong (head wind, storm, calm), it could take twice as long or even longer. The situation changed in the following decades. At 1899, it was usual to cross the ocean on steamers, even for the majority of the emigrants. Now they reached New York in about nine or ten days.

Asked by DaBomb - Fri Jun 5 00:39:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'll attach a google query for sailing courses in your area, but what I would really suggest is to see if you can finagle your way into a yacht club dinghy racing fleet. If you simply get your hands on a laser, sunfish or one of the other designs that are frequently raced you can probably learn on your own. You can learn to sail on your own but once you start racing other identical boats that's when you learn the fine points of sailing that allow you to trim for speed. What you might even want to do is to simply volunteer to crew on someone else's boat and learn from them.

Q. Around the year 1818, how long would it have taken to sail from Lower Canada (Quebec) to England? And please don't just say 'a few weeks'. I'd rather something more specific. Thanks.
Asked by Danielle N - Thu Aug 10 20:39:46 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Atlantic crossing was highly dependent on the weather. It could take a few weeks or a few MONTHS, depending on conditions. Usually it was about 6 weeks I think, on average. Sailing in winter was especially slow and dangerous. I am reading "John Adams" by McCullough (an excellent read...) where Adams had to go to France in winter to negotiate with the French during the American Revolution. He almost didn't make it - and it took the ship something like 12 weeks to cross, between the weather and playing cat and mouse with British cruisers. Love, Jack

A. I'd give it about 4 weeks, depending on if you want to stop at other places in between. If you want it to be faster, you can literally take a cruise from one place to another. Many cruises actually do go to Easter Island. You'd just have to depart from one of the major ports, such as in Florida or California. Good luck!
