How can a model sail car go against a headwind?
Q. Can a small model sail car go against a headwind? If so, what is the best shape/orientation of the sail? If that is not possible, what other designs (which are powered by the headwind itself) are capable of traveling against a headwind?
Asked by Archibald G - Fri Apr 11 07:30:11 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You won't be able to go straight into the wind. You'll have to tack into the wind, just like a sail boat does. I recommend you study up on how a sailboat works, and use those same tactics with your sail car.

We want to sail the world for a year. How long will it take my husband and I to learn everything?
Q. We would like to travel the world for approximately a year by sailing to various destinations. I realize there are people that sail their entire lives and never do something like this, but I really want to know if it is possible and the best way to go about it. How long will it take my husband and I to learn everything we need to know about the ocean, sailing, and so on until we would be capable of such a venture? Some relevant info: -We live in the USA and are both in our late twenties. -Neither one of us has any experience in sailing at the present time. -We are both in good shape and absolutely love to travel. -We are currently 4 hours from the ocean but might consider a relocation to make this dream a reality. A. if its your first time on the open water your greatest initial challenge will be seasickness probably. otherwise for 2 people a 45-50 foot sloop or ketch will be enough..sailing is pretty easy to learn. will take bout a day of F'ing up to learn how it works-motor out to the open waters and see how. a good book is "chapman piloting and seamanship" buy that before you get the boat...pretty much a know it all guide.. if you got $150k to blow i'd suggest getting a snark or daysailor or something before you head around the world. they go for about a grand or 2 so- sailing around the world sounds all romantic and fun in the beginning but when you're actually out in the waves you might change your mind in a day- its more of a lifestyle… [cont.]

How to sail to Europe but not go on a cruise?
Q. I want to sail to Europe instead of flying, but I don't want to take a cruise. I want to sail across the Atlantic, be dropped off and spend awhile in Europe and then sail back across the Atlantic. I don't want to stay on a ship and have them show me Europe. Does anyone know of a company who provides ships that cross the Atlantic?

What is the best route and time to sail from Washingon State to New Zealand?
Q. We want to sail from Seattle to New Zealand making periodic stops along the way for a day or so island hopping all the way down. We understand we may be stuck in New Zealand for several months before the weather is right to sail back. We are in a 30 foot Columbia Defender right now but are considering buying a bigger boat (maybe 35 to 40 footer) but this little Defender is a tough, scrappy boat and set up nicely for two which is all we are.

A. I would go Galapagos, Pitcairn, Polynesia, Cook, (maybe a few more) New Zealand. Way back would be strait up to Hawaii and over.

A. The Herreshoff 28 design has made more round the world voyages than any other boat in history so that should answer the question. It's a beauty to sail and can take on a hurricane with ease.

Has there ever been an attempt to put a modified sail on an automobile to enhance gas mileage?
Q. For instance, at a certain speed, a sensor would calculate wind direction and raise a lightweight sail to take advantage of the wind. Would this be efficient? Your thoughts.
Asked by ANTHONY M - Mon Mar 3 07:59:05 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Once your car accelerated over the wind speed, your sail would only create drag. So to drive on the interstate you'd need a favorable wind at near hurricane strength.

Why would a crew of 20 sail into the most dangerous waters on earth without sufficient firepower?
Q. Everybody is talking about how "the nations of the world should come together to stop Somali pirates." I think that's misguided. The way to stop Somali pirates is for the crews of commercial vessels who sail near the Somali coast to arm themselves to the teeth. As it is now, these cargo ships have little to nothing in the way of weapons. That's why the Somali pirates attack cargo ships, and not navy ships. Because the cargo ships aren't armed and the navy ships are. Thoughts? .
Asked by Jennifer - Mon Apr 13 21:26:50 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree, it is time to arm these cargo ships, there is no reason for any boats to approach them in the shipping lanes unless is clearly a rescue or some coast guard ship. All others stay away. Or you will be shot on site. Other wise the ships will continue to be floating ducks so to speak. If we and other countries don't arm. Than it could be said we are just allowing the pirates to come on board. Shoot down some of these pirates before they have a chance to get close to the ships and they may find a new source of work. But then comes the question of shooting down boats in international waters, and proving they are pirates ? … [cont.]

How is Full Sail University online classes?
Q. I am looking to take a full sail online course of web design and wanted to see if anyone has taken any online courses from Full Sail and I wanted to know there thoughts on how it was. I am not worried whether your credits transfer since you get your degree there. I just want to know how the online classes are as far as teaching and homework?
Asked by Gnarlin - Fri Sep 11 18:16:40 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Full Sail online classes are as worthless as on-campus classes. Full Sail is a vocational school pretending to be a university. It is not regionally accredited. Course credits will not transfer to real universities. You've been warned... ADDED "I am not worried whether your credits transfer since you get your degree there." You will start to get worried when you find out many employers don't recognize "universities" which are not regionally accredited, for employment or promotion. You'll really be sorry when you want to get a Master's at a real university and they laugh at your "Full Sail University" degree.

A. Good question and I'm glad to hear it. I'm still trying to figure out exactly when and what were the circumstances that led to my interest in sailing but in 2003 I went on my first sailboat ride and I said, "YEAHHH". It just made a lot of sense. Like you, I envisioned sailing to far off places but the problem - also like yours - is I didn't know how to sail and where to begin to learn. There are a quite a few schools willing to teach you but the problem is you'll have to sort through them because often you can spend quite a bit of money when you really don't have to. So you're going to have to trust your instincts in this area. Secondly it depends on what size boat you'll learn on. There are 2 schools of thought: 1. Mid sized keel… [cont.]

Q. Around the year 1818, how long would it have taken to sail from Lower Canada (Quebec) to England? And please don't just say 'a few weeks'. I'd rather something more specific. Thanks.
Asked by Danielle N - Thu Aug 10 20:39:46 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Atlantic crossing was highly dependent on the weather. It could take a few weeks or a few MONTHS, depending on conditions. Usually it was about 6 weeks I think, on average. Sailing in winter was especially slow and dangerous. I am reading "John Adams" by McCullough (an excellent read...) where Adams had to go to France in winter to negotiate with the French during the American Revolution. He almost didn't make it - and it took the ship something like 12 weeks to cross, between the weather and playing cat and mouse with British cruisers. Love, Jack

How long would it take to sail from Winchesterbay, Oregon, to Easter Island?
Q. I just was wondering. It's a dream of mine to sail to it someday. I am starting my research early.
Asked by Ryan R - Sun Sep 23 20:58:59 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd give it about 4 weeks, depending on if you want to stop at other places in between. If you want it to be faster, you can literally take a cruise from one place to another. Many cruises actually do go to Easter Island. You'd just have to depart from one of the major ports, such as in Florida or California. Good luck!

Q. Also, what age do I need to be to sail, and do I need an adult if i am 14?
Asked by Avery B - Tue Jun 17 22:56:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the sailboat is over 19 1/2 feet, you need a Safe Boaters Certificate. They accept SBCs from some other states (NY, MA,RI). CT SBC is not age restricted and is valid for life. If you are going to sail ANY size boat, I would strongly recommend getting your state's SBC, and probably take a sailing class and/or get certified. I have ASA certifications; I know the Basic Keelboat certification is recognized by most states as an SBC.

A. They are very light, so they will move with barely perceptible air movement. 5 knots is comfortable sailing on all points. 10 knots makes you pay some attention to avoid capsizing. 20 knots and you're either using all your skill to stay upright and having a great time, or you're swimming. Much above that, and you're just trying to survive. Or you've taken down the sails and are sailing on bare mast.
