From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Sailing is the art of controlling a boat with large (usually fabric) foils called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves. While there are still some places in Africa and Asia where sail-powered fishing vessels are used, these craft have become rarer as outboard and modified car engines have become available even in the poorest and most remote areas. In most countries people enjoy sailing as a recreational activity. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising includes extended trips, short trips within sight of land, and daysailing. From Wikipedia under the

I know people pay to have their yachts sailed from up north to Florida or from Florida to the Caribbean, how do I get a job doing that and how much does a captain typically make per trip? Some times your airfare as well. This is the oportunity to sail with extremely experience captains ( as some one said you dont see kids skippering delivery boats) and to accumulate the necessary hours to take your captain licence either six pax or 50 or 100tons. In the days of the old sailing ships, galleons clippers and other large vessels, which relied entirely on the wind; how did they navigate into ports and harbors. Asked by Bill D - Fri May 29 13:34:24 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Each port had a cadre of professional Pilots, familiar with the nuances of the location, who took over the command of ships as they sailed toward the harbor. They struck their sails, and employed large rowboats with gangs of rowers as "tugs" to help them navigate tight quarters. Q. Going sailing tomorrow and need to make sure we are wearing proper shoes. Don't want to be Gilligan and slip off the side. Asked by beachrat - Tue Jul 28 11:46:29 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you aren't buying deck shoes for sailing, maybe you have something in your closet that will work. If you have any tennis shoes or skating shoes with the yellowish grip rubber on the soles, those would be your best bet. If not, converse chucks aren't bad if you lace them up and the bottoms aren't worn smooth. If you don't have any of that, wear tennis shoes or any rubber-soled shoe. You want something that will give you grip on a wet deck, so you can just try the shoes you have and see which ones grip best in situations like that.
